Epitalon programA plain-language guide to care questions Chapter index

Untangling epithalamin

Two names. Different research.

A similar name is an easy detail to miss. Here it changes what a study can tell you.

The myth

The older human life-span reports tested epitalon.

Where the promise meets evidence

The human reports about living longer used epithalamin, material taken from cattle brains. They did not test epitalon.

The difference in plain words

Epithalamin came from a small gland in cattle brains, a part of the brain that makes melatonin. Melatonin is a chemical involved in sleep. An extract is material taken from that part of the animal.

A lab makes epitalon. It is a peptide, a short chain of protein building blocks. Scientists used what they learned about the extract’s building blocks to make epitalon.

The FDA, the US drug agency, treats epithalamin and epitalon as different substances. That was still the position checked on September 28, 2026.

A result for one substance does not prove a benefit for the other.

What the life-span reports leave open

Some of the older human groups also received another gland extract.

The published summaries give limited detail about how the groups were chosen and compared.

These reports do not establish that epitalon makes people live longer.

When a page offers a striking result, check the substance in the study before the headline.

A question to take along

Ask: Did the people in that study receive epitalon itself, or the older extract?

Then ask for the study link and the part that answers your health question. A study title alone is not much to work with.
